The historic town hall is a masterpiece of half-timbering. There are different accounts of when it was built. One time it says 1610 and another time 1670. It was probably rebuilt later in the 19th century.

Around 1123, the Counts of Cappenberg founded a Premonstratensian settlement in Elvenstad. At first, the nuns lived in an annex monastery close to the canons. Around 1148, they received a new monastery building some distance away on the Nidda. However, the convents initially continued to be administered by one person. The first document from 1293 about a partial division of property has been preserved. In the 14th century, the Premonstratensian nuns then acquired further extensive land holdings, including 15 villages. In the 16th century, the monastery probably remained in existence during the Reformation period. It was damaged in the Thirty Years' War, and the nuns had to flee to Frankfurt am Main for a time. After that, it developed again and had 26 nuns by 1700. In 1803, the Premonstratensian monastery in Niederilbenstadt was closed due to secularization. In 1808, the last nuns moved out. Afterwards, the church and most of the cloister buildings were demolished and new buildings belonging to the Hessian state domain were erected in their place. These have largely been preserved.
