The Roman Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Andernach is a massive gallery basilica with four towers, a west wing, and a chancel. It is located on the western edge of the town, directly adjacent to the city wall and thus also on the western side of the Antunnacum fort, which was located there in Roman times and from which the later settlement emerged. In Andernach, the names Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and Mariendom (Cathedral of St. Mary), or simply "Dom" (Cathedral) are also common. The legitimacy of this name is often questioned, but St. Mary's Church has always been the town church and, since 1194, the private church of the Archbishop of Trier in Andernach, who was also (officially) the parish priest here.

Unfortunately, you have to cycle on a country road without a bike path. In heavy traffic, caution is advised when crossing the Abtei road.

The path along the eastern shore of the lake is beautifully shady and you pass the impressive mofettes (rising CO2 bubbles in the lake).
