New biotope (2025) with Green Classroom

The canal bank near Hüntel, not far from the confluence of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Ems river, is an excellent place for hiking and cycling right by the water.

The Borken Paradise lies south of Meppen in the Emsland district and is one of the region's most scenic nature reserves. It encompasses approximately 160 hectares along an old branch of the Ems River and combines wetlands, riparian forests, and former pastures to create a biodiverse habitat. Characteristic features include old groves of trees, ditches, and open water areas that provide shelter for numerous bird and insect species. Formerly used as pastureland, the area was later renaturalized and is now under strict protection. Perfect for hiking.

The simple footbridge is rarely found on maps. It allows you to cross the Ems River, which rushes beneath your feet. Surrounded by green meadows, the air smells of damp earth. Here you can truly enjoy the peace and quiet!

The Brandspick is located in the Borkener Paradies nature reserve. It is part of an extensive floodplain forest and pasture area surrounded by an old branch of the Ems river. Today, the area is a protected nature reserve. Many animal and plant species find ideal living conditions among the floodplain forest, dry grassland, and small ponds.

The Esterfeld Forest stretches northwest of Meppen and is one of the largest wooded areas in the Emsland region. Covering approximately 1,200 hectares, it features a diverse landscape of pines, spruces, oaks, and birches – a varied terrain that has developed over decades from former heathland. Today, the forest serves not only forestry but, above all, recreation. Walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers will find quiet paths, boggy depressions, and dense rows of trees that are home to deer, foxes, and numerous bird species.
