Largest Paleolithic open-air site in Bavaria. "The Speckberg is a Jura plateau that pushes spur-like from north to south into the Schuttertal and drops down steeply to the west and south. Originating from former pasture areas, it is today, like the Zeller Hartl, a dry grassland area with a diverse world of plants and small animals . The discovery of a hand ax and other Stone Age equipment at the beginning of the 1960s enabled the Nassenfels school principal Oswald Böhme to identify the Speckberg as a Paleolithic hunting station. Favored by nature, the Speckberg was made for hunting and a camp for Ice Age hunters. Favorable sunshine, dry subsoil, good prospects for hunting large herds of game, the proximity of water (debris) and nearby raw material deposits (chert) attracted man for at least 70,000 years."
