Pumping station De Nieuwe Polder. The level of the ditches is 5.70 metres below NAP and all rainwater must be pumped away towards the Oude Rijn in the north and the Rotte in the east. In the past, dozens of mills did this work, now a number of electric pumping stations. Sometimes this is still done from an old building, such as the Pumping station De Nieuwe Polder, which pumps the water from the Zoetermeerse Plas to the Noord Aa. You can skate around it, the path is not very smooth, but quite doable.

The Zoetermeerse Plas was dug for sand extraction for the construction of 3 residential areas. The water has a depth of 25 to locally 30 meters and it can therefore suddenly become very cold at the surface due to currents. On the north side, the swimming beaches are therefore also demarcated to where the water is shallow.

Plenty of action in and around the lake

The swamp forest, Prielenbos, has developed spontaneously and nature goes its own way here. Due to the large variation in vegetation this area attracts a wide variety of breeding birds. Despite the swampy environment, you can enjoy walking in some places in the Prielenbos. The boardwalk ensures that you don't get wet feet.

Beautiful water, clean, lots of fish, nice to swim in when it is more than 30° degrees.

The municipality of Zoetermeer has constructed a swamp pearl along the Broekwegkade. Marsh pearls are habitats where special plant species can thrive. These plant species in turn attract animal species such as reed birds, butterflies, water shrews, amphibians, dragonflies and owls. The water plants in this swamp pearl have a purifying effect. By allowing water from the Zoetermeerse Plas to flow slowly through this area, nutrients from this water are absorbed by the plants and micro-organisms in the marsh pearl in the hope that this will help prevent the formation of blue-green algae. This is a common problem in the summer in the Zoetermeerse Plas. Marsh pearls have also been created in other places in Zoetermeer. At the Zoetermeerse Plas (de Beren), the Prielenbos (het Geertje) and at the Benthuizerplas.

the Geerpolder in 1625 provided with dikes and a mill. In the 19th century the peat was dug up for peat extraction. The lake that was created was drained in 1867 by a steam pumping station. When the polder was dry again, farmers loosened the soil, fertilized it and put it into use, the polder is approximately 4 meters below sea level!!!
