along the Dender

At the Brussels Forts in Dendermonde stands Cubes, a tilted cube sculpture by artist Luc De Man. The work consists of geometric shapes, partially sunken into the earth and clad in transparent materials. The cube—a rare form in nature—symbolizes human order within an organic environment. With Cubes, De Man explores the tension between culture and nature. The sculpture merges with the landscape and changes shape depending on your viewing angle. This creates a subtle dialogue between humanity and its environment, in which art and nature reinforce each other.

A double-headed eagle, installed in 1548, adorns the tower as a symbol of power and vigilance. Inside is a complete carillon of 49 bells, cast by bell founder Sergeys from Leuven. This carillon plays automatically every fifteen minutes and is also played manually during concerts.

Luc De Man's sculpture 'Cubes' symbolizes in a simple way the dialogue between human activity and creativity on the one hand, and the power of nature on the other. The starting point for the design of the Cubes sculpture is the tension between nature and culture: on the one hand, nature unfolding unhindered, and on the other, what is created by humans. When these two elements are combined, they find a new balance and form a new whole. Artist Luc De Man deliberately chose cubes. They are very rare in nature and can therefore be considered markers of human activity. The cubes are partially sunken into the ground, emphasizing the intense contact between the artwork and the earth. Furthermore, some of the cubes are covered with a transparent material, allowing the natural environment to remain visible through the sculpture and thus become a part of it. For 100 years (2012-2112), this sculpture will watch over letters for the future, written by residents of Dendermonde on special paper, encased in an urn, vacuum-sealed, and then placed in the plinth. By creating a new mouth of the Dender outside the city centre, the old Dender forms an idyllic water feature that connects the green edge of the city with the cultural-historical pearls in the heart of the city. The banks of the Dender are accessible over the entire length. Hikers can therefore start at any point to take a trip along the old Dender. The part at the Tragel, with its rich fauna and flora, invites you to daydream. Between the Sas and the Groene Dender, the watercourse is flanked by unique statues, bridges and buildings.
