Tranekær Castle is the oldest inhabited house in Denmark and stands out from the beautiful landscape with its location and its beautiful red color. Originally built as a heavily fortified castle with a moat and drawbridge, the castle enjoys an extremely favorable location. Isolated and built on a 20-meter-high shore, it used to be possible to sail from both the east and west sides of Langeland to the foot of the castle. When traveling on Langeland, one had to pass by the castle. The castle is located on one of the island's many "hat hills." In this way, the site offered the castle's inhabitants considerable protection from the very beginning. With the construction of moats and a ring wall, the castle became a virtually impregnable fortress over time. Tranekær Castle is inhabited by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family and is now a modern agricultural and forestry business with an area of 1,733 hectares. The main building and the castle grounds are not open to the public, but outside the moats, you can stroll along a beautiful path, where you can see unique trees in the park, including the rare Chinese conifer, the water fir. Small, whitewashed brick church. The oldest building dates from around 1220, otherwise late Gothic. Renovated between 1830 and 1831. The frescoes in the church date from the 16th century, some of which were repainted throughout.

Very beautiful church window and church interior

The church building consists of a nave, chancel and apse from the late Romanesque period. The porch and tower were added later. The tower originally had a four-sided spire, just like Magleby Church. The church was originally built of brick on a block stone base. Some elements of the original construction can still be found in the wall, including a few single round-arch windows.
