The Sanctuary of Fatima, in central Portugal, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. The city of Tomar was founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century on land granted by Portugal’s first king. The order set up a convent on a hill and by the riverside plotted what would be the last Templar town in the world. When the Order of Christ took over from the Knights Templat, Tomar was where many Portuguese voyages in the Age of Discovery were planned. And as the order’s governor, the world-changing explorer Henry the Navigator lived in Tomar and took charge of its expansion in the 15th century.

Construction started on it in 1593 by Italian architect Filippo Terzi and ended in 1613. The aqueduct is nearly 6 km long (3.7 miles) and for centuries remained the most important source of water to the monks who lived in the Convento de Cristo. Most tourists will actually be surprised to find such a huge structure in a small city like Tomar.

With its two elegant limestone arches, this 16th-century bridge holds even older memories: it was once part of an ancient Roman road that connected Tomar to Coimbra.

The Silvas Mill is one of many that dot these fields, recalling times when the wind moved everyday life. The view is stunning, even more so on sunny days, when the landscape lights up.

Malhou owes its name to the rhythmic sound of hammers and the shine of forges: in times past, this parish was famous for the talent of its blacksmiths, masters in the art of shaping iron with skill and strength. It was this craft that marked the identity of the land and gave it its name.

The Anta do Penedo Gordo stands like a stone echo from ancient times. With its polygonal chamber formed by nine pillars and a corridor flanked by four on each side, this megalithic monument still preserves traces of the ancient mound, visible mainly to the south. Its construction dates back to the Late Neolithic or Chalcolithic period (between 3500 and 2000 BC) when the landscape was filled with mystery, rituals and stories carved into the rock.

The historic Castle of Belver (Castelo de Belver) is one of Portugal's most beautiful castles. It was built by the Order of the Hospitallers in the late 12th century early 13th century on the border between what was then Christian and Islamic Portugal - the River Tagus. The castle is on a hill on the northern bank of the river. The name comes from belo ver or "beautiful to see."
