"The Windmill Tower, the oldest municipal mill and the only windmill in Neuss, is documented as early as 1477. It survived the great city fire of 1586, as well as the demolition of parts of the city wall and the leveling for the construction of the citadel in 1672. The lower part of the Windmill Tower, built of basalt and tuff on a trachyte base, was directly integrated into the 13th-century city wall. From the Middle Ages until the early 19th century, the tower also served as a municipal prison. In 1796, the robber Matthias Weber, known as the "Fetzer," was imprisoned here after making a spectacular escape from the tower. He and his accomplices had previously broken into the town hall and stolen parts of the city's treasure from the archives. In the mid-19th century, the mill ceased operations. The tower subsequently served as a storage room, its vault as the municipal icehouse. The Natural ice extracted from the surrounding waterways was stored and sold for cooling purposes. In connection with the construction of the municipal water main in 1881, the windmill tower was raised in brick and converted into a water tower. "The Blood Tower, constructed of basalt and tuff, is one of the last remaining semicircular towers of Neuss's former city fortifications. These defensive towers were inserted into the city wall at regular intervals and connected by a battlement. "St. Quirinus Cathedral is the most historically, urbanistically, and artistically significant building in Neuss and one of the Romanesque treasures in the Rhineland. It is a three-aisled, late Romanesque, vaulted gallery basilica with a high westwork, transept, and three-apostle choir above a five-aisled crypt. The westwork, with its square central tower, is richly decorated. The octagonal crossing tower supports a Baroque dome and a statue of St. Quirinus. In the 4th century, a Christian burial ground lay here. A memorial chapel, a memoria, was built to commemorate the dead. Whether St. Quirin's Church emerged directly from this is uncertain. The first church on the present site dates back to the Carolingian period. In the 9th century, the original church was replaced by a three-aisled basilica above a three-aisled columned crypt, which was expanded by two naves in the 11th century. was expanded.
