Church of St. Wendelin Bechtoldsweiler The church was built in Bechtoldsweiler in 1812 and dedicated to St. Wendelin. History: From the beginning, Bechtoldsweiler belonged to the Stein district and thus also to the local parish. According to tradition, in 1719 an unmarried "pious benefactor" named Lambert Kaus had a chapel and a small house built in front of it. The founder lived in the small house and served as a sexton. After his death, he left a capital of 1200 guilders for the construction of a new church. The initials L(ambert) K(aus) F(ecit = has built) above the portal and the Lambertus statue with a model of the church on the gallery still indicate this foundation today. Construction history: The current church was built in 1812 and dedicated to St. Wendelin after the chapel had become too small. The then pastor of Stein, Josef Rainer, was "very active in the construction and acted as the construction manager," according to the school and local chronicle. On June 26, 1833, the new little church was ceremoniously consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Hermann von Vicari, who later became Archbishop of Freiburg (in the same week that the churches of Sickingen and Stein were consecrated). In 1841, a separate cemetery was built, after the dead had found their final resting place in Stein until then. After the interior of the church had already been renovated in 1980, a uniform concept for the interior was created in 2005 as part of a general renovation, according to the specifications of the town pastor Dr. Benedikt Ritzler and under the direction of architect Klaus Osterreid. To this end, the classicist room elements were subtly highlighted (e.g. by gilding the cornices and friezes); on the other hand, the altar area was adapted to today's needs through the use of contemporary design elements (e.g. the back wall of the apse) and modern materials (especially brass). Auxiliary Bishop Rainer Klug came to the altar consecration on November 13, 2005, a big day of celebration for the whole village. The Roman open-air museum in Hechingen-Stein covers a large area where excavations have uncovered a villa rustica with several buildings, a temple area and a bathhouse. Due to its location on a main Roman road and the temple area with small temples in honor of various gods, it is assumed that this was more of an inn. Some of the buildings and temples have been reconstructed so that one can get an idea of what such a villa rustica looked like and how it was used in the past. Archaeologists are also hoping to gain insights into this. It is assumed that further finds can be made outside the area. From the restored terrace there is a beautiful view of Hohenzollern Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern and thus of Prussia and the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II.
