The castle ruins are fenced off and cannot be entered. Behind the castle, a small stone staircase leads to the lake, where you can see a wreck that has run aground.

6月 8, 2024, Eagle Barge Inn
The Great Glen Way is not accessible between North Laggan and Aberchalder (June 8, 2024). A large area west of the Caledonian Canal is strictly closed and sealed off by heavy gates. A severe winter storm has made extensive forestry work necessary. A diversion via Invergarry is well signposted. The additional effort is a good 2.5 miles and about 300 meters in altitude.

6月 8, 2024, Fort Augustus Locks
The multiple locks are very busy. Especially on weekends, various boats constantly arrive, wanting to be locked through. The place is very popular with tourists, and accordingly, there are many restaurants and shops in the area.

The Bridge of Oich (also known as Victoria Bridge, Aberchalder) is a taper principle suspension bridge, designed by James Dredge, across the River Oich near Aberchalder in Highland, Scotland. The bridge opened in 1854 and was used to take the main road traffic over the river until 1932.

11月 15, 2023, Eagle Barge Inn
The Eagle Barge Inn is a unique and cozy cafe and restaurant floating on the Caledonian Canal at Laggan Locks. It is a converted Dutch barge built in 1926 and used as a troop transporter in World War II. The café and restaurant has a warm fireplace and comfortable leather sofas in the bar, and a separate dining area.

11月 15, 2023, Laggan Locks
Laggan Locks are a series of water lock gates on the Caledonian Canal between Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. Boats coming from the north-east side arrive at a water level of 35 meters above sea level (the highest stretch of the Caledonian Canal). They are lowered through the locks to the lower water level at Loch Lochy. It's a fascinating place with a bit of everything: scenery, boats using the locks, the site of a historic battle and a floating cafe!

Who the hell is digging a canal through the middle of the Highlands? You might think, but it still seems quite consistent. The Great Glen is a tectonic fault that runs right through it and was also worked by a glacier. This left behind a steep trough valley. And although we are in the mountains, the top of the canal is only 42 m. This is ideal for a canal that should make the difficult journey around the outside, and also through the Pentland Firth, unnecessary. The canal was built from 1803 to 1822 under the direction of the Scottish engineer Thomas Telford. Only about a third of the total length of the canal had to be dug, otherwise natural water bodies, the lochs, were used. One of the lakes will still play a role here! The differences in height are compensated for by a total of 29 locks, partly individually and partly in lock staircases, the longest of which, Neptune's Staircase, consists of 8 individual locks and is the longest lock system in Great Britain.

I wouldn't expect either of the two takeaways to be open :)

2月 17, 2023, Kilfinnan Burn
The Great Glen Way on the northern shore of Loch Lochy between Clunes and Kilfinnan lies mostly in coniferous forest with the loch sadly out of view. However, during the descent to Kilfinnan there is a delightful change to open scenery (as shown in the pictures) including views of Kilfinnan Burn and of Laggan Locks in the distance. Kilfinnan is also the site of an ancient burial ground for the chiefs of the MacDonells of Glengarry and is also linked to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

1月 10, 2023, Caledonian Canal
The Caledonian Canal runs for 60 spectacular miles (100km) through Scotland's Great Glen, connecting Inverness on the east coast with Corpach near Fort William on the west coast. The canal was constructed in the early 1800s to designs by celebrated Scottish engineer, Thomas Telford. A third of the canal's length is man-made, with the rest being formed by the Great Glen Fault and taking in Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy. A multi-user path along its length makes it a perfect place to ride, run or hike.

Measuring 46 metres in length, the Bridge of Oich is an innovative 'taper principle' suspension bridge spanning the River Oich – part of the Great Glen. Designed by English brewer-turned-engineer, James Dredge, it was built in 1854 after floods destroyed the old stone bridge that stood here previously. The bridge was used by all traffic until it was bypassed in 1932. It was restored by Historic Scotland and re-opened to pedestrian traffic in 1997.

12月 29, 2022, Bridge of Oich
One of the few pedestrian bridges over the Great Glen, this was originally built when Thomas Telford constructed the main road along the Glen. Designed by James Dredge, he was instructed to create a single span across the river to reduce the chances of it washing away (as it had previously). When the A82 was upgraded in the early 20th Century a newer road bridge was built next door.

12月 29, 2022, Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway Tunnel
This disused railway, which follows the route of the Great Glen from Fort William, was built between 1897 and 1903. Despite intentions to continue the tracks from Fort Augustus to Inverness, this never occurred and the route was scrapped in 1946. This is one of the tunnels which was built over General Wade's Military road to accommodate it.
