The oldest hill in Lyon houses the remains of Lugdunum, the capital of the Gauls during the Roman Empire.

The ancient theater of Lugdunum is a remarkable vestige of Roman times. Built in the 1st century, it could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. Today it offers a unique setting for cultural events and outdoor shows.

Perched on a hill overlooking Lyon, the Fourvière basilica is an architectural and spiritual gem. Built in the 19th century, it impresses with its richly decorated interior and panoramic views of the city.

The Amphitheater of Lyon (French Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, German Amphitheater of the Three Gauls), in Lugdunum (today's Lyon) is a Roman amphitheater and was part of the "federal sanctuary of the three Gallic provinces" (Ara trium Galliarum) in ancient times. The sanctuary served the veneration of the Roma and Augustus by the Gallic tribes, which were organized in three provinces (Gallia Belgica, Gallia Aquitania, Gallia Lugdunensis) and whose central town was Lugdunum. The building was probably built in the second decade of the 1st century AD and, together with the Ucubi and Emerita Augusta complexes, is one of the oldest amphitheaters outside of today's Italy. Originally a comparatively small building intended primarily for the upper class and delegates from the Gallic tribes, it was expanded in the middle of the 2nd century into a much larger complex that offered space for the entire city population. The amphitheater is located at the foot of the hill of La Croix-Rousse, where the Rhône and Saône rivers met in ancient times.
