      The theater was built in the 1st century BC. Built in 500 BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus. At that time it had a diameter of 90 meters. It was built on the side of the Fourvière hill, which overlooks the city. Some of the stones used came from far away, imported from Glanum, a town that used to be in what is now the Bouches-du-Rhône region.
      Every summer a very popular music festival takes place there: the Nights of Fourvière.

        The ancient Roman Odeon is one of the most important Roman monuments in Lyon. It is located right next to the ancient theater of Fourvière and with it forms an archaeological ensemble unique in the world, because in the region of "Great Gaul" there is only one corresponding ensemble (theater with odeon) in Vienna.

        Built at the end of the first or the beginning of the second century, it could accommodate up to 3,000 spectators for musical performances, readings or serve as a meeting hall. In late Roman times, the area was abandoned and used as a quarry for building materials before being almost completely buried under rubble.
        Archaeological excavations only began at the beginning of the 20th century and continue to this day. You can also take part in guided tours on the site.

                The Amphitheater hosted circus shows and games. Every year, representatives of the 60 Gallic nations gathered there and renewed their oath of allegiance to Rome and Augustus around the federal altar, which has now disappeared.
                It was exposed during work in 1834 and excavated in the 1860s.
                In this amphitheater died, in 177 AD, the first Christian martyrs of Gaul including Saint Blandina and Saint Irenaeus. The latter, first bishop of Lyon, gave the Church of Lyon a pioneering role in the diffusion of Christian ideas in Roman Gaul.

                  The Amphitheater of Lyon (French Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, German Amphitheater of the Three Gauls), in Lugdunum (today's Lyon) is a Roman amphitheater and was part of the "federal sanctuary of the three Gallic provinces" (Ara trium Galliarum) in ancient times. The sanctuary served the veneration of the Roma and Augustus by the Gallic tribes, which were organized in three provinces (Gallia Belgica, Gallia Aquitania, Gallia Lugdunensis) and whose central town was Lugdunum. The building was probably built in the second decade of the 1st century AD and, together with the Ucubi and Emerita Augusta complexes, is one of the oldest amphitheaters outside of today's Italy. Originally a comparatively small building intended primarily for the upper class and delegates from the Gallic tribes, it was expanded in the middle of the 2nd century into a much larger complex that offered space for the entire city population. The amphitheater is located at the foot of the hill of La Croix-Rousse, where the Rhône and Saône rivers met in ancient times.
