The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas is located on Saalstraße, at the corner of Brückenplatz in Kahla. It is a branch church of St. Elisabeth in Gera and belongs to the deanery of Gera in the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. As the inscription on the entrance side attests, the church, which was part of a hospital, was rebuilt in 1486. From around 1550 until the end of the 19th century, it served primarily as a chapel for the formerly neighboring "old cemetery," but also occasionally as an alternative site for the town church when renovations or repairs were necessary.
