13th-century Moor Abbey is a Franciscan friary, ruined since the reformation. The surviving church, built in 1471, retains its Gothic features and is designated as a National Monument. It endured multiple burnings and periods of reoccupation before being abandoned in 1748. It is open to the public for free and the location is surrounded by beautiful views.

Kilfinane makes a great stop-over along the Ballyhoura Way, offering a choice of pubs and a restaurant/take-away. If you have time for exploration, there is a striking Anglo-Norman motte, built inside an earlier ringfort. The hill rises about 32ft (10m) high.

The striking remains of Castle Liscarroll tower over the village and surrounding countryside. Over the years it has stood witness to much bloodshed, including The Battle of Liscarroll in 1642 which saw over 600 people killed. Note that the monument is for external viewing only, internal access is not permitted.

When touring Killaloe, the charm of the town can best be captured on the banks of the canal. The route runs along the water and always offers a view over the river to Ballina and the historic Killaloe Bridge. The soothing rippling, the boats gently rocking and the lush green banks can be wonderfully enjoyed from the saddle. The town itself is full of small cafes and restaurants - an ideal place to take a break or start or end the tour. The road itself has a few bumpy spots, but the scenery easily makes up for that.

Desmond Castle commands a strategic point on the River Maigue and was built by the Earls of Desmond to control traffic along the waterway. It is an imposing building, even in its ruinous state.

If you are riding through Killaloe, make sure you pedal along Canal Bank for great views over the water to Ballina and Killaloe Bridge. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town, which also makes it a perfect start and/or finish point on a ride.

Clare Glens is a lovely wooded area right next to the cute little bridge over the River Annagh. There are walking trails through the woodlands but the best thing about stopping here is the waterfall very close to the road, a chilly wild swimming spot.

Kilmallock is home to a number of National Monuments and is a great place to visit by bike, especially if you love history. A number of medieval buildings remain in place today and you can visit the Collegiate Church of St Peter and St Paul, the ruins of Kilmallock Abbey and King John's Castle.
