Above the castle complex is the pilgrimage site of the Neuburg citizens: The 46 cm tall Madonna, a replica of the Altötting Madonna from the 17th century donated by Kuno von Falkenstein, stands in a 700-year-old oak tree. Age and candle smoke have colored the statue of the Madonna dark brown, almost black. Station paintings of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, created by sculptor J. Hess in the 19th century, lead to this lonely pilgrimage site. https://neuerburg-eifel.de/index.php/stadt-neuerburg/wandern

Beautiful tightrope walk over rugged slate rocks with great views. I liked it very much.

The monument owes its existence to the President of the Association of the Eifel and Ardennes, Georg Wagner, who suggested its construction as a member of parliament and President of the Chamber in Luxembourg. The memorial consists of four stones bearing the names of the »pioneers for a united Europe« (Konrad Adenauer, Joseph Bech, Paul-Henri Spaak and Robert Schuman). The memorial stones come from the respective countries of origin of the named founding fathers. Gneiss boulder from the Lüneburg Heath for Adenauer, a sandstone block from the Müllerthal-Waldbillig for Bech, blue slate from the High Fens for Spaak and a slate block from the Vosges for Schuman. The fifth stone represents the Treaties of Rome and the signatories from the six countries involved. Near the European Monument and directly at the actual three-country point, a pedestrian bridge connecting Germany and Belgium leads over the Our, which was named after Georg Wagner. According to legend, a robber baron fell in love with the wife of the Lord of Ouren. He devised a ruse to kidnap the noble lady. After a nocturnal meeting at the foot of Ouren Castle, he rode off with the lady. He had previously re-shod his horse, but had the shoes attached the wrong way round. In this way he wanted to deceive the pursuers. However, the new irons made a lot of noise on the rocky ground, so the pursuers could hear the couple from afar. They placed the fugitives on the rock that broke off steeply to the Our, trapping the couple. To avoid captivity, the robber baron urged his horse, which jumped off the rock with both riders in a high leap. The lovers fell into the floods of the Our, but survived. Only the horse broke his legs. As thanks for the miraculous rescue, the robber baron vowed to donate a chapel on the rock. However, he did not fulfill this vow and was struck by lightning.
