Following the course of the Trallo it is therefore possible to retrace a part of the history of Brusimpiano: some remains of the mills are still visible. The area is also characteristic from a mineralogical and fossiliferous point of view, as the abandoned mine shows. The arrival point is a suggestive waterfall of clear water that falls from a height of about ten meters into a pool dug into the rock, like in a glass of champagne, forming foam, dust and rainbows. From there the Trallo begins its course, silent and slow, descending in leaps into the narrow gorge of the valley. Source: www.visitbrusimpiano.com

stone bridge built between 1820 and 1822, called "ul punt da canaa", because it was located near the water intake for the mill

Punt from Canaa The deep furrow of the Breggia has always represented a difficult obstacle to crossing the valley. Of the various ways used to pass from one bank to the other, many traces remain within the Park: the oldest is perhaps the Murnée ford. The first indications of the extraordinary bridge built between two rock spurs 35 m above the river bed at the narrowest point of the Gorges date back to 1426: the Farügin bridge (or St. Peter's Bridge. The circular road was built around 1820 between Castel San Pietro and Morbio Superiore which crosses the Breggia with a stone bridge (Punt da Canaa) the large iron bridge (Punt da Castel) was built in 1997, replaced by the current concrete bridge.

The gorges of the Gaggiolo Torrent cut the upper part of the Meride Limestone called Kalkschieferzone, composed of finely stratified limestones and marl. Here, in numerous excavation campaigns starting in 1936, the World Heritage site's most recent vertebrate fossils were discovered. The panoramic terrace of Val Mara offers a glimpse of marine deposits and fossils dating back to the Middle Triassic, 239 million years ago. The contents, offered in Italian, German and English, include educational panels, binoculars, casts and models of fossils, stone walls and reconstructions of the Middle Triassic environment, when Val Mara was a subtropical marine basin.

As you can guess from the name, the Breggia Gorge Park takes its name from the river that forms these beautiful gorges and the magnificent pools that are found there, the Breggia River. At this point you can see a small bridge that crosses the river from one side to the other.

Also known as Caverna Generosa, it was discovered in 1988 by two speleologists of the Ticino Section who, traveling through the area in the summer, identified its opening. Given the small size of this opening, it had to be enlarged in any case to allow passage.

A trip to the park of the Breggia Gorges will be a real journey through time. In this region of the Mendrisiotto, along the river Breggia, one finds an exceptional geological condition: due to erosion by the water, a rock formation emerged that covers the period between the Jurassic and the Tertiary and dates back to 80 million years! Evidence of the ancient seas can be found in the rock: fossils, remains of underwater mires and signs of climate changes that took place in epochs before humans appeared on earth.

It is the geological features that make the Breggia Gorges Park in the Muggio Valley the first GeoPark in the country. Due to erosion by the water, a rock formation emerged that covers the period between the Jurassic and the Tertiary and dates back to 80 million years. Evidence of the ancient seas can be found in the rock: fossils, remains of submarine avalanches and evidence of climate changes that took place before humans appeared on the scene. Thanks to these discoveries, it was possible to reconstruct the origins of the Monte Generoso basin in a distant past. The park boasts a rich flora and fauna, including numerous protected or threatened species. In this area there are also buildings of historical and cultural interest such as the Red Church (14th century) and the Castle (12th century), which are located on the territory of Castel San Pietro. As well as some passages in the historic streets. The park can be explored on a historical or geological route. The first route begins at the PostBus stop “Morbio Inferiore, Ghitello”, from where you can reach the Ghitello mill from 1606 in a few minutes. We continue along the gorges to the Mulin da Canaa. Various witnesses of human activity can be seen between biotopes and rich biodiversity, including the cement factory from more recent times or the Chiesa Rossa from 1343. The second route, the geological one, begins at Mulin da Canaa, on which one can see the incredible evidence of the earlier marine area with fossils and clay, which go back to the Jura and the Tertiary. Marveling at the fossils is allowed, but it is strictly forbidden to take it with you! The oldest rock layers in the park can be seen in the area around the mill; they are over 190 million years old. The path leads over a bridge that spans a deep gorge. We continue along the river over landslide areas and through forests. The route ends at the Ghitello mill, where there are younger deposits from water activity. These go back to the Quaternary.

Inside the cave, which is located on the eastern side of Monte Generoso, the "Orso Cave", the University of Milan has brought to light finds of over 500 cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) lived and extinct on the Monte Generoso between over 30,000 and 50,000 years ago. During the excavations in the Caverna (Grotta dell'Orso), some findings emerged that can be attributed to the Neanderthal Man, who lived in the historical period between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago. There are four finds: the first two were discovered in 1998, and the rest in 2002, discovered in the "Sala Terminale". The visits, individual or in group, are always carried out with an expert guide. The cave of the bear can be visited!

It is the first Swiss GeoPark, located between the municipalities of Balerna, Castel San Pietro, Morbio Inferiore and Morbio Superiore, rich in finds - natural or man-made - of great interest and curiosity even for the layman. A wonderful excursion, also thanks to the beauty of the landscape. The old mill of Ghitello (1606), behind the parking lot of the Breggia center of Balerna, is one of the starting points; You first walk along the small lake, then follow the river and pass some factory buildings, including the cement factory and the beer brewery. After crossing the Breggia, you climb up the Magna valley and come to Colle San Pietro, where you can find the remains of the medieval castle, as well as the Chiesa Rossa (red church), which dates back to the 14th century and is home to wonderful Frescoes are located. Descending along the marked path, you cross the Punt da Canaa (canal bridge). You can look at some rock layers that are among the oldest in the park (limestone pebbles dating back 190 million years). Crossing a recently built bridge, you cross a narrow, deep gorge and continue along the right bank, always passing rock layers and through some special biotopes, to finally return to the Ghitello Mill, where you can see the most recent deposits (Tertiary and Quaternary).
