The water sprite at the Benkenteich near Torgau. The legend: A man from Klitzschen had collected firewood in the forest. Then a handsome rider came riding towards him on a large horse, with a large gauntlet in his hand, who greeted the woodcutter and asked if he knew the Benkenteich. When the man replied that he knew the pond, the rider promised him a tip if he would go with him and show him the place. When they came to the Benkenteich, the rider jumped off his horse and said: "I am a water man, and my wife has been kidnapped by another water man. I have searched for her in many waters and lakes all over the world, but found nowhere, and now I am to find her in such a nasty and wild place ! At the end of the 15th century, the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Sachsen had an artificial pond built near Torgau by decree from the Electorate of Saxony. It should be used for fish farming and thus supply the farm. During the fortress period, the Great Pond also served as a water reservoir for filling the moats. Today it is a dam and flood protection system and at the same time an important nature reserve and local recreation area. The Great Pond is still used for fish farming. Then as now, the dam is filled with water from the Black Graben. The system also dams the Zinna flood (Red Ford). The Great Pond has an average depth of 1.34 meters and covers an area of 175 hectares. The barrier structure is a five meter high earthen dam.
