There is a large telecommunications system with a transmission tower on the Matro (the associated cable car is only available to staff) and this is no coincidence, as the summit is one of the elevations with the most extensive, unobstructed views all around. Regarding the name: “Matro, mater” are names for foothills, elevations that are not too high. Also called “Poncione Strecuolo” and “Pizzo di Sobrio” in old maps and texts.

Idyllic and varied area

Idyllic, original mountain village easily accessible by bike or on foot. Great view of the Verzasca valley.

Highest peak in Ticino, which lies entirely within the canton's borders. Ascent from the Capanna Tencia is feasible. Some block climbing necessary in the upper third. Warning: markings are not always visible. It is essential to only go when visibility is good. Crossing in the direction of Capanna Soveltra is possible. But then with an additional 1500 m descent, a somewhat more serious tour.
