The approximately 99-hectare nature reserve is registered under number 81 in the list of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 1974 (date of the regulation: April 3, 1974). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Segeberg district. The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association. The nature reserve is located in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park on the southern shore of Lake Stocksee. It protects a 40-hectare section of Lake Stocksee and the islands of Großrethberg, Kleine Insel and Lange Insel as well as the Kleinrethberg peninsula and the area to the south with Lake Lütten. Lake Lütte is connected to Lake Stocksee by a canal. The islands and the peninsula as well as the area around Lake Lütten are predominantly wooded, the remaining areas are partly used for agriculture. There are also herbaceous meadows, succession areas and reedbeds. The clear water in the Stocksee means that numerous mollusks can live here, including pond and river mussels, mud snails and marsh snails, and more rarely, boat snails. They are the food source for various diving ducks, rails and fish. The forest areas have a partly primeval forest character. They have important deadwood stocks, which are the livelihood of many animal, plant and fungal species. Woodpeckers, owls and various songbirds can be found here.

On a nice dirt road you suddenly come across this old oak tree and wonder how old it is.

It is variously described as the thickest oak in Germany and is therefore one of the most well-known oaks of all. It has the enormous trunk circumference due to large trunk outgrowths. The trunk is said to have gotten this thickening from the repeated eating of young twigs by grazing cattle. The main base then reacted with strong scab formation and flooding. It is said to have lost its crown towards the end of the 19th century down to a height of 6 m. To date, the oak has slowly regenerated and formed a new top branch and side branches. In the 1970s, young people set fires in the trunk, which severely damaged the oak. You can still see the blackened interior. It is one of the fastest growing oaks, which is why an age of 300 years or more would theoretically be possible given the rapid annual growth. If this development continues, it could soon be the strongest oak in Germany, since it is only 8 cm apart from the alder oak.

There is a nice resting place with stone benches and a table as well as a campfire place.

Those who like old trees can see a nice specimen here. In my book about the old German trees, the age is given here as 320 to 450 years.

From Wikipedia: From 1299 to 1426, the place had Luebian city rights and thus also a mayor and councilor. In addition, the state elder of Holstein-Rendsburg lived in the village, so that the city assembly for all of Holstein took place in Bornhöved until the beginning of the state parliaments in Kiel in 1480.
