The heathland landscape of the Lüneburg Heath is beautiful at any time of year. The vast expanses of heathland, with their purple carpets, are a feast for the eyes during the flowering season. Those who don't necessarily have to travel during the flowering season are better off choosing the other seasons when there's significantly less going on.

Finally, I was here during flowering season. These large purple expanses are amazing. You really have to see them.

The vastness of the heathland here is impressive, and the juniper bushes, birches and pines stand as bizarrely shaped solitary figures like sculptures in the landscape.

The Lüneburg Heath Nature Park is a unique landscape in the Lower Saxony Geest region. This region between Buchholz and Soltau boasts extensive heathland, moors, clear heath streams, and near-natural forests. The Wilseder Berg and the adjacent terminal moraine ridge in particular offer an impressive backdrop for hikes and exploration. Traditional heathland management has resulted in beautiful dwarf shrub and juniper heaths, which benefit from extensive maintenance measures.

The Lüneburg Heath Nature Park was one of the first nature parks to be founded in Germany and is now one of the largest and best known of its kind. It covers an area of almost 110,000 hectares and includes the largest contiguous heathland in Central Europe. These are located in the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve around Wilseder Berg, the heart of the nature park. But moors, old forests, heather streams, rivers and vibrant villages with old farms and thatched houses are also parts of this unique cultural landscape that are worth protecting and experiencing.
