A beautiful park for hiking, walking, jogging with benches and old trees

The Danube-Auen National Park is a 9,600 hectare national park that stretches from Vienna to the mouth of the March in Lower Austria on the border with Slovakia. It is one of the largest, largely intact floodplain landscapes in Central Europe along the Danube. The area is 38 kilometers long and measures barely four kilometers at its widest point.

Devín Castle is definitely one of the pride and symbols of Slovakia. It is not for nothing that it is also on a 5ct coin. The castle has one of the most moving, but also the richest histories among the castle residences in Slovakia. The presence of Celtic and later Roman ethnic groups in the territory of Slovakia is connected with the existence of the former fort. The castle witnessed the glory and fall of Great Moravia, the first state entity of Slavic ancestors in Slovakia, and was an important part of the system of border fortresses of the Kingdom of Hungary. The first documented mention comes from a deed of donation from the year 1021. When large areas of the country were depopulated after the Ottoman invasion in 1529, Croats were settled. These formed the majority of the population for centuries. The castle, which was destroyed during the raids, was rebuilt by Count Salm from 1550 onwards. The so-called Neuschloss was built by Count Auersperg in 1679. In the Oberau settlers' putsch in 1926, unemployed people from Vienna occupied the Au between Orth and Mannsdorf on the Danube.

The castle ruins of Theben, which sits enthroned on a high cliff above the confluence of the Danube and Morava, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Central Europe. The enchanting landscape around the ruins and a wonderful view into the distance make this place an unforgettable tourist destination. Thebes has a very important role in Slovak history, because this place provides evidence of the first settlement of the country. The strategic location gave reason to fight for this castle thousands of years ago. The Celts had their settlement here, the Romans controlled the Limes from here and the Slavs built a fearsome fortress here. After all, the castle was considered the western border of the Hungarian Empire for centuries. The castle was conquered many times, but was always rebuilt and fortified. Its end, as is often the case in history, was without justification: in 1809, the Thebes Castle was blown up by the French army. Unforgettable views are also offered from the upper castle, where the permanent exhibition Devin Castle is installed in the 13th - 20th centuries. Based on the archaeological findings from Devin Castle, supplemented by historical facts, individual phases of the castle construction are presented here.
