The nature reserve is particularly characterized by several inland dune areas, some of them towering, with a mosaic of extensive, open and vegetation-free sandy areas with more or less lichen-rich silver grass and sand sedge lawns. Valuable, now very rare, light mixed oak forests have developed in the dune edge areas, which are also of great importance from a species protection perspective. Due to the striking transition on the northern slope of the Verden dunes into the lowlands of the Halsebach, the protected area has extremely complex, closely interlinked biotope structures and a special character and beauty.
