ヴェッセム近郊の墳丘墓は、この地域における最も古い居住の痕跡の一つであり、青銅器時代（紀元前約2000年～800年）にまで遡ります。これらの低く丸い丘は墓地として築かれたもので、しばしば風景の中に微妙に認識できます。 青銅器時代には、遺体を火葬するのが一般的でした。その後、遺灰は骨壺に入れられるか、直接地面に埋葬され、その上に砂と芝生の丘が築かれました。時には、一つの墳丘墓に複数の埋葬が行われ、時間が経つにつれて大きくなっていきました。 墳丘墓は、ヴェッセム近郊のように、乾燥していて風景の中でよく見える場所であったため、しばしばより高い砂地に位置していました。これらは、埋葬機能だけでなく、領土や重要なルートの標識としても機能したと考えられています。 多くの墳丘墓は何世紀にもわたる農業や林業によって平坦化されましたが、いくつかは保存されており、今日では貴重な考古学的記念碑となっています。散策中、それらは森の中のわずかな隆起としてしか見えないこともありますが、何千年もの人間の歴史の静かな証人です。 自然と先史時代が文字通り出会う、風景の中の特別な要素です。

When you walk along the stream, you hear the babbling sound of the flowing water in the Beerze Valley. My mind drifts to babbling brooks and streams in mountainous terrain. Wonderful!!

The fish ladder in the Beerze river was constructed to allow fish to move freely up the stream again. The system consists of fourteen low basalt steps, where the water makes a short drop at each step, then forms a resting basin. This allows species such as chub, stone loach, stickleback, and spined loach to swim gradually against the current without becoming exhausted. The fish ladder is part of the broader stream restoration project for the Beerze river. This restoration has returned the stream to a more natural, meandering course, allowing the current, riparian zones, and the ecosystem to function as they once did. The fish ladder prevents height differences or old weirs from forming barriers and ensures that fish once again have access to their spawning grounds upstream. This is an interesting point for hikers because it clearly demonstrates how nature conservation and water management converge: a practical structure that has a direct impact on biodiversity in the Beerze valley.

Nice in the sun, benches and enjoy

The son of the previous owner of the Kampina, Pieter van Tienhoven, has made great efforts as chairman of Natuurmonumenten to preserve the Kampina, the preservation of meandering streams, and for nature conservation in general. His ashes were scattered on the Kampina at the spot where his memorial stone was also erected. This viewpoint was his favorite spot.

Beautiful surroundings to take a rest

In the immediate vicinity of this monument I found two other memorials at the base of a tree. A stone with a bird on it and a heart-shaped memorial with the text “Rest in peace”. I do not know whether there is a relationship with the large memorial.
