"The site of the park was once within the boundaries of the 2,300-acre Royal Deer Park of Toxteth which became "disparked" in 1591. The land eventually came under the Earl of Sefton's control. In 1867 the Council purchased 375 acres of land of the park's development for £250,000 from the Earl of Sefton. Sefton Park is one of the largest in the "ribbon of Parks" originally envisaged in 1850s by the Liverpool Improvement Committee and which came eventually to include Newsham and Stanley Parks. A European competition was launched to design a grand park. 29 entries were received and the competition was won by a French landscape architect Édouard André with work on the design also undertaken by Liverpool architect Lewis Hornblower. The park was opened on 20 May 1872 by Prince Arthur who dedicated it "for the health and enjoyment of the townspeople". "Like many parts of Liverpool (such as West Derby, Woolton had quarries. These produced the desirable red sandstone used for all sorts of buildings, from cottages to merchant palaces like those built on the lands of Allerton Hall (such as Allerton Priory, Allerton Tower and Springwood). One Woolton quarry supplied the stone for the Anglican Cathedral – probably one of the last customers it had before it closed. The peak of quarry use was in 19th century. Quarry Street commemorates the presence of the quarries, with an old (and very large) quarry being at the village end, and a newer quarry at the north end. A beautifully serene little sanctuary created on an island in the lake. Some of the stones are inscribed with quotes from Nelson Mandela which, as you would expect give you pause for thought and reflection.

A beautiful park that is popular with all age groups. Walkers including those with pooches, cyclists, joggers. And there's something for everyone to enjoy. We'll worth a visit.

A grade 1 listed area of parkland Sefton Park is much loved by the locals. Designed to look natural there has been landscaping done here but it's well designed and feels nice to walk around. Carpets of daffodils and bluebells are planted to flower in spring. The curving paths and driveways make the most of the features and visit the boating lake complete with ornamental fountain and the glass palm house. There is a cafe.
