The Parco della Rimembranza in Udine is a historically and botanically valuable, green urban park that serves as a memorial to past wars. With its imposing monuments, living entrance gate, and diverse tree life, it offers a green, culturally significant oasis within the city. At the same time, it is currently being modernized and maintained – a fine example of the connection between history, nature, and contemporary urban development. Location and Layout The park is located directly in the historic center of Udine, along Via Diaz, and stretches in an elongated shape between Piazzale Osoppo and Piazzale Oberdan. It follows a former section of the historic city walls and serves as one of the city's green "long" areas. • History & Origin Built in 1924 according to a design by architect Ettore Gilberti, the park was created in the spirit of commemorating the fallen of the First World War – typical of the so-called "Parks of Remembrance" of that era. • Distinctive Design Elements The entrance is particularly highlighted by a triumphant portal made of Elaeagnus x ebbingei, which serves as a living gateway and alludes to the post-metropolitan ambitions of the early postwar period. • Memorial Sites & Monuments in the Park Immediately at the entrance are two memorials: one for civilian war victims and another for Nazi victims in concentration camps. There is also a memorial to the Bersaglieri (Bersaglieri), and in the center (Piazzale Del Din), a commemorative column made of Aquileia stone commemorating the "Unity of Friuli," erected on May 24, 1924. • Nature and Vegetation The park boasts a wide variety of trees: various cedar species (e.g., deodara, atlantica, glauca), pines (e.g., Pinus pinea, P. halepensis, P. wallichiana, P. sylvestris), and holm oaks (Quercus ilex) characterize the green landscape. • Evaluation & Use The park is a popular place for moments of rest and relaxation under the treetops—a true "lung" (green lung) in the urban environment.

This historic garden park is dedicated to Loris Fortuna. It is a place of rest and relaxation. After a period of unsatisfactory maintenance, the garden is finally well-kept and welcoming again, especially on nice days, and above all because of its majestic trees, its proximity to the historic center and its relaxing atmosphere.

Please note that a large part of the hike is in the maquis and nothing is marked out... luckily we had a good connection, 😉
