From the 12th to the 15th century it experienced its best period becoming one of the main centers of Benedictine spirituality in Italy. The Avigliana lakes natural park is a treasure chest of biodiversity and represents a notable resource for Avigliana, both from an environmental and tourist point of view. The park is made up of three ecosystems: the two lakes, the Mareschi swamp and the moraine hills. The lakes are the only ones surviving among those formed following the last two great Pleistocene glaciations in the Susa valley. The Sacra di San Michele dominates this protected area from above, recalling that, since the year 1000, it has represented the point of reference for every person on a pilgrimage who crossed the Alps towards Rome or the Holy Land.

The castle, which dominates the whole area around Avigliana, is an excellent panoramic point. In reality, on the top there is little to see, in fact the castle is more beautiful seen from below. However, the steep climb that leads to the top repays the effort for the 360° view that ranges from Musinè and Pirchiriano (the two mountains that mark the beginning of the Susa Valley), from the two lakes of Avigliana, from the morainic hill from here it reaches Rivoli ending up on the Turin plain with, in the background, the hill (Superga, Maddalena, Pino torinese...) I went up and down the same steep road, not trusting too much the two paths that go around the hill (directions on the spot). I've seen them quite tight...
