The summit plateau of Monte MONDOLE is home to two small sacred monuments: + Firstly, a classic cross, such as those often found on mountain peaks. This one is simple in its design, without the body of the crucified Christ; the white frame clearly highlights the darkness of the longitudinal and transverse beams. + Secondly, hikers will find a figure of the Virgin Mary here; the statue of the Mother of God does not stand under the cross beam, as in a classic crucifixion group (on the other side you would then find the favorite disciple John), but rather to one side. Her gaze is also not directed towards the cross, but rather goes down from the mountain into the distance.

This stretch repays all the effort needed to reach it... what can I say? Travel it calmly, stop to admire the natural environment, the caves, the erosion work done by the stream... it doesn't happen often, to travel such spectacular roads! A piece of advice: moderate your speed downhill, the road is almost devoid of protections towards the valley!!!

Is it possible that you can still see the Monviso in the background?

The Porta Sestrera, located at an altitude of 2,228 meters, is a pass also known as the Lapassè pass, which connects the Ellero valley with the Pesio valley. The name "sestrera" comes from the Provençal term "sistre", which refers to a specific type of clayey, flaky rock. Before the construction of the modern roads connecting southern Piedmont and western Liguria, Porta Sestrera was one of the main communication routes between the Cuneo region and the Ligurian Riviera. In April 1944, this area was the scene of the Easter battle between Nazi-fascist troops and Italian partisans. After intense fighting around Pian delle Gorre, the partisans retreated towards Porta Sestrera and from there dispersed, moving towards Carnino and the head of Val Tanaro.
