The town is the administrative seat of the Loreley municipality and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002. Loreley was long a district town – from 1886 of the district and from 1939 of the Sankt Goarshausen district, and from 1961 to 1969 of the Loreley district – and is designated as a medium-sized center in the state's regional planning.

The Loreley is a 132-meter-high slate cliff near Sankt Goarshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate, situated at the deepest and narrowest point of the Middle Rhine. It rises steeply to 193.14 meters above sea level on the right bank of the Rhine at river kilometer 555 and offers a sweeping view of the river bend near Sankt Goarshausen and Katz Castle.

The Hilchenhaus in Lorch am Rhein is an architectural gem and considered the most important Renaissance building in the Middle Rhine Valley. It was built between 1546 and 1548 by Imperial Field Marshal Johann Hilchen von Lorch—although he did not live to see its completion.
