The "Laundry" sculpture in Malchow commemorates the historic washing places on the lakeshore, which were once an integral part of everyday life. Until the 1950s, many Malchow residents used these public spaces to wash their laundry in running water – often because their homes lacked hot water or suitable washing facilities. These so-called "laundries" were usually located at the end of the numerous washing lines and were simple wooden platforms that could be adjusted to the water level. The use of these spaces was closely linked to the social structure of the time. Working-class women and less affluent families, in particular, resorted to them. With industrialization and the increasing availability of washing machines from the 1920s onwards, this form of washing gradually declined. In 1907, the first full-service laundry opened in Malchow, which was a great relief for many. Today's sculpture is therefore not only a homage to the everyday work of women of previous generations, but also a symbol of the changes in living and working conditions in the 20th century.
