The Great Crested Newt hut is gone. Dead. Demolished. Nothing stands in its place yet (except for the installation of "Valleien Vertellen" (Valleys Telling Stories), an open-air exhibition that will move to the Dijle River in early 2026 and previously visited the Demer). Will a new hut be built? An illustrated information board says so. And so does the yellow building permit. One local resident, however, has his doubts. But he had more doubts about the events in his neighborhood. So: yes, a new hut will be built unless the axes of the political budget choppers indirectly lead to a different decision in the long term. What it should look like? You can see that on the information board, which also asks for a little more patience. In any case: it will remain beautiful here, with or without the hut.

Here you'll go to the birdwatching hut on the water, which is located a few meters further out on the lake. In normal, wet conditions, you'll also walk a fair distance above the lake, which is surrounded on both sides by a boardwalk with poles. From the hut itself, you can see almost the entire lake, and it usually doesn't take long for waterfowl like cormorants to fly past your lens. On both sides of the path, you can admire the water lilies, depending on the season, of course.

This birdwatching hut is located a stone's throw from the Arenberg domain and the KUL campus on the Kapeldreef. Here the Dijle enters the area before flowing through Leuven via the domain mentioned. Just before the birdwatching hut the Leiegracht flows into the river and from the birdwatching hut you can see over the sand trap and the drainage basin after which the Dijle flows to the Arenbergmolen.
