The site for the fortress, which still conveys a sense of its former defensive strength, was naturally chosen primarily for military reasons, and indeed, Corfu has been besieged and attacked by enemy armies throughout its history. Today, only tourists besiege the fortress during peak season. In this prominent location, with a sweeping view over the sea, a cross was erected that can be seen from afar. It is an essential symbol of Christianity, uniting us across denominational boundaries (Orthodox/Catholic/Protestant) in our faith in the crucified and risen Son of God, Jesus Christ.

The old stone lighthouse sits on the highest part of the island peninsula of the Old Fort, looking out over the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North and the Bay of Garitsa to the South. The lighthouse was built by the British in 1822, when they were in control of the island to guide shipping in the area. If you are physically able, there is a fairly steep trail you can hike up to reach the lighthouse, but the tower itself is closed. There is a plaza-like area at the base of the lighthouse that you walk around on and get some great views and pictures of the city and ocean.

Once you reach the top of the old fortress, you have a fantastic view. If the weather is clear, you can see not only the roofs of the city from here, but with a bit of luck, the Greek mainland and the Pantokrator mountains to the north. A viewing platform about 72 meters high welcomes guests at the top of the old fortress. At the very top is the Ákra Síderos lighthouse from the 19th century. It is considered the oldest lighthouse of its kind still in operation, as well as a large steel cross.

The way up, in over 30°C, was really exhausting. The view from the "summit cross" was simply amazing!

All that remains of the large fortress on the Bateria Peninsula from the Byzantine period are the outer walls and a restored gate tower. Under the Venetians, the fortress was significantly expanded and occupied almost the entire peninsula. Of the former 17 towers, only the foundation walls remain. The interior of the castle is a single olive grove, partly cultivated and maintained, partly more like a jungle. Very idyllic up there along the walls...
