The Great Rinnental was formed by the erosive power of water. During the last ice age, meltwater streams flowed over the limestone of the Swabian Alb and dug deep gullies and valleys into the landscape. Over time, these erosion processes have formed the distinctive valley that we see today. The water that flowed over the Alb plateau not only created the Great Rinnental, but also numerous smaller gullies and crevices that crisscross the landscape. These watercourses contributed to the formation of the characteristic limestone formations that are typical of the Swabian Alb.
