Built... The first documented mention of a Lord of Örner dates back to 1159. Who the builders were and when the castle was built is unknown. From the 14th century onwards, the Counts of Mansfeld are known to have held the castle as a fief. In 1560, with the consent of the liege lord, they sold it to the Counts of Schulenburg, who then bought it back in 1668. In 1713, the Burgörner estate and castle were sold to Count von Posadowsky, Baron von Postelwitz. A year later, the Prussian state became the liege lord of the castle and, after several transfers, eventually granted the fief to the von Humboldt family. The castle was used less and less from then on; from the 19th century onwards, it was abandoned, used as a quarry by local residents, and fell into complete ruin.

The inner ward has an almost square ground plan measuring 60 x 60 meters. It stands slightly elevated above the surrounding terrain. In the southwest corner are the remains of the keep. These remains still stand 12 meters high. The outer ward is presumed to have been located to the east of the inner ward. To the northeast, the complex was protected by a moat. However, this is no longer visible in the terrain. On the other sides, the natural slope of the hill provided sufficient protection.

The upper entrance is accessible by car. The remains of the castle can be viewed from the cemetery. Unfortunately, there is no connection between the two paths.

Unfortunately, it is a lost place and no entry is allowed.

In my opinion, the castle looks more beautiful from a distance than up close. Unfortunately, you can't really get close to it.

Since 1949, the Bornstedt local festival has taken place every year in the ruins.

Bornstedt Castle, also known as Schweinsburg, stands high on the Hornburger Sattel – a ridge on the eastern edge of the Harz Mountains. The impressive, thirty-meter-high keep of the castle ruins can be seen from far away. The former Carolingian rampart was probably built in the 8th century. The "Brunstediburg" was first mentioned in documents around 880 in the Hersfeld tithe register. It consisted of a stone core castle with a keep and an outer castle, once surrounded by a ring wall and a moat. In 1115, Emperor Henry V used Bornstedt Castle as a station for his troops in the battles at Welfesholz during the Saxon Wars. From 1301 to 1780, the complex was owned by the Counts of Mansfeld, and from 1502 it was one of their residences. During the Thirty Years' War, Bornstedt Castle lost importance and began to decay.
