The hut will protect you from the rain, but I don't think it's suitable for taking a break. It's totally dark and uncomfortable, and the numerous graffiti make it look very dirty.

In the process, pieces break off, become deposited on the dike or in the salt marshes, or are washed away and ground down by subsequent floods. Thus, the moor gradually shrinks. One of its special features is that two completely different ecosystems border each other here: the freshwater ecosystem of the moor and the saltwater system of the salt marshes and mudflats. The moor is accessible via a 150-meter-long boardwalk in the southern part, but otherwise, due to its uniqueness and sensitivity, it is not accessible in order to preserve it for as long as possible. The shelter is a bit old, but in bad weather you can find a dry place to stay.

NEUENBURGERFELD - The Neuenburgerfeld village community has been looking after the historic “Old Peat Shed” on a voluntary basis for over 25 years. Work has now been completed on an approximately 25 square meter extension, which houses, among other things, three public toilets. “We have received noticeably more registrations since the extension opened,” said the first chairman of the village community, Uwe Meinen, at the inauguration ceremony. One can only hope that the new premises are spared from vandalism, because after all a lot of volunteer work goes into building the extension. In addition to cleaning and maintaining the entire peat shed facility, the Neuenburgerfeld village community is now also responsible for the new extension with the toilets. The planning for the extension, which requires approval and is visually adapted to the old peat shed, was carried out by the building authority of the municipality of Zetel.

The peat shed Rest where the peat once lay The peat shed in Neuenburgerfeld is a relic from the time when the clinker industry flourished in the southern Friesland district. The brick masters needed a lot of peat to burn the stones. The sods that peat cutters had cut in the Baasenmeer and in Stapeler Moor were taken to the drying area and placed there in rings. Once the peat dried out, it was placed in piles, so-called bülten, and transported away over the dams that ran through the moor. From 1907 onwards, the peat shed was used to store valuable fuel. The Neuenburgerfeld village community has looked after the building since 1983. An adjacent soccer field and an annex with sanitary facilities make the peat shed the ideal rest area.
