The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

The crater has an extent of 1400 m in east-west and 1200 m in north-south direction and is thus about 125 ha in size. The highest crater rim elevation is on the north side at about 516 meters above sea level. Here is a 12 m high wooden lookout tower - the Landesblick. About half of the Maarkessel is taken today by the Maarsee. The village Meerfeld is located on the southern edge within the cauldron.
