Enjoy the break, everyone.

Birkenplatz and Birkenhütte are a beautiful landmark in Rüdershausen. We stumbled upon this lovingly maintained rest area by chance and used it for a break during a bike ride. The entire complex is beautifully designed, with plenty of seating and restrooms. What's striking these days is that there are no signs of vandalism. 👍

A very nice rest area. A shelter, a bench with a table and a repair station next to it, is located towards Burhave (Mitteldeich).

The hut will protect you from the rain, but I don't think it's suitable for taking a break. It's totally dark and uncomfortable, and the numerous graffiti make it look very dirty.

Only when extreme storm or hurricane tides reach more than 1.70 m above mean high tide in Sehestedt does the more than 3-meter-thick "moor island" begin to float. In the process, pieces break off, become deposited on the dike or in the salt marshes, or are washed away and ground down by subsequent floods. Thus, the moor gradually shrinks. One of its special features is that two completely different ecosystems border each other here: the freshwater ecosystem of the moor and the saltwater system of the salt marshes and mudflats. The moor is accessible via a 150-meter-long boardwalk in the southern part, but otherwise, due to its uniqueness and sensitivity, it is not accessible in order to preserve it for as long as possible. The shelter is a bit old, but in bad weather you can find a dry place to stay.

This part of the moor was separated by the construction of the dyke. It partially floats during storm surges, hence the name.
