Here, you have to bypass a pasture. The grass is extremely high, and the path itself is barely visible. This requires a good feel for the road, leg strength, and a good dose of intuition.

Old fruit varieties are not only a valuable cultural asset, but also important for biodiversity, as they are often more resistant to diseases and climate change. They also provide habitat and food for many insect species.

The Aukrug Nature Park Association has planted another 30 fruit trees in 2022. This time on the hiking trail next to the Kiesgruben Lake. The path is fantastic, not only when the fruit is in bloom or ripe - it offers hikers a beautiful view to the east over the lake, which is also the winter quarters of the rare Bewick's swans.

The Haaler Au drains part of the Aukrug Nature Park. It was originally a left tributary of the Eider. With the construction of the Kiel Canal, it was separated there and has flowed into the canal ever since. Shortly before it flows into the canal, it forms a small lake. This can be seen here.

The inscription on the memorial stone reads: Expansion of Haaler Au 1932 - 1986 in honor of Dipl. Ing. Hinerk Bayer, ORR Andreas Paulsen, ORR Jens Muthorst.

The ponds were formerly created as fish ponds in order to become more independent from the meat economy.

The lake-like polder areas on the lower reaches of the Haaler Au provide a habitat for many animals. The pygmy swans in particular use these areas as a resting place in February / March and strengthen themselves here for their onward flight. So use the winter time for a trip here. During the growing season, everything should be very overgrown and therefore less of the beautiful nature visible.

Unfortunately, there is not much more than a remnant of a pond left of the pond. We don't know if it seeped away or was drained.
