Built in 1891, the castle, more of a manor house in the style of a simple palace complex, stands at 216 meters above sea level, directly north of Kasseler Straße, on the west bank of the Schwalm River. The castle is surrounded by a large, largely tree-lined park, which extends to the north as far as the route of the former Knüllwald Railway, now the Rotkäppchenland Railway Cycle Path, and to the east across the Schwalm River to the L 3263 state road.

In 2023, 100 years of museum history will be celebrated in the Altenburg Residential Palace. With the founding of the Playing Card Museum in 1923, the history of the house that later went by the name “Castle and Playing Card Museum” began, initially limited to just five rooms. Reason enough to commemorate this anniversary with a special exhibition, because there were many turning points in its development, most of which were accompanied by social and political upheavals. These upheavals are, among other things, the focus of the exhibition. The Castle and Playing Card Museum in Altenburg is internationally known as the oldest playing card museum in Germany. For a long time, the cultural and historical significance of the playing card was underestimated, as to this day it is not only a gaming device, but also a contemporary document and a small graphic work of art. Whether with the techniques of Woodcuts, copper engravings, stone printing and offset printing, playing cards always convey a lot of useful information. In cooperation with the playing card company “Jack, Queen, King”, which will show its most valuable collectibles at the same time, you can expect a particularly colorful exhibition experience.

Unfortunately no inspection or similar possible, as it is privately owned. Unfortunately, the walk from Alsfeld wasn't really worth it...🤷🏼♀️🙈

The former splendor of this ruinous relic from the past can only be guessed at today. It was a small but certainly imposing castle complex.

The 30 by 26 meter castle complex was built around 1100 on a bend in the Antrift river at the south-western foot of the Eulenberg by the Lords of Ruhlkirchen on an artificial castle hill, surrounded by a moat fed by the Antrift. She was a goatgrove fief. Around 1200 the enclosing walls were reinforced to two meters. The knight Gerlach von Ruhlkirchen and his wife Jutta are mentioned from 1262 to 1272[1], who were later in the service of the Hessian landgrave in Alsfeld. A Herdanus from Ruhlkirchen appears in a document as late as 1278.[2] Around 1293 the castle was destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse. From 1986 to 1987 the remains of the castle were excavated and parts of the circular wall were restored. Source: Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgh%C3%BCgel_Ruhlkirchen
