The Pethau Pond in Zittau's West Park is not a naturally occurring body of water, but an artificially created pond. Its geological environment is typical of the area around Zittau, which is influenced by the Zittau Basin and the surrounding mountains. As the pond was artificially created, its banks are mostly shaped by human intervention, probably sealed with clay or loam to hold the water. The soil under the pond consists of typical loose sediments that were deposited by the nearby river valleys (e.g. Mandau) and natural erosion.
