Plan for longer breaks and bring plenty of food and drink! The "steps" are sometimes higher than expected, and the sun gets quite hot. But it's absolutely beautiful :)

Have an early start to avoid the crowds that quickly build up on days with good weather. Wear layers especially in winter as the top can quickly get to low temperatures.

If you are looking for the oldest, most direct, fastest and most popular route (starting early helps) up Table Mountain and want to really get your heart racing, then this is the right place for you. A trail that consists mostly of rock steps, "stair climbing for advanced climbers" so to speak. 2.5 km and 650 meters of elevation gain are overcome. If you don't have enough time to fit a climb up Table Mountain into your vacation itinerary, we highly recommend it - we were impressed!

I completed the trail in January 2025, from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in sunshine. I'm 70, do a 7 km walk on flat land about five times a week at a brisk pace, play tennis, and am quite fit for my age. To describe the "Platteklipp Gorge Hiking Trail" as challenging is, to say the least, an understatement. It's definitely not a nature-oriented hiking trail like you'd imagine in the Allgäu region, for example. The terrain consists exclusively!!!! of boulders in the "Fred Flintstone" design, often with footholds of 40-50 cm! At times, I had to negotiate the incline in the upper switchbacks on all fours. Every now and then, there's a "railing" made of thin barbed wire. Very user-friendly🙈 When I reached the top, I was completely exhausted. If someone were to give up due to exhaustion or injury, I can hardly imagine being rescued by stretcher. If the way up was already a challenge, the way down would probably be even more challenging. In any case, a way back down beyond the cable car would have been unimaginable for me. Of course, this would be a different prospect at a much younger age, that's for sure. The scenic experience and the view of Cape Town are, however, without a doubt breathtaking. I must strongly advise older people who only occasionally hike on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with a high BMI and/or even classic "rubber potatoes" who just want to "hike" up Table Mountain!!!! against Platteklip Gorge.

There are also hikes at the Bourkes Luck Potholes. These have to be registered and you need a permit which costs something. It would be possible from about 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 🌞👌

The Panorama Route is a tourist attraction in the Transvaal-Drakensberg in the province of Mpumalanga in the east of South Africa. It is a region with tourist attractions due to the steep slopes with views far into the lowland of the Lowveld and interesting rock formations along the road. The route known as the Panorama Route runs on the regional road R532 and on a section of the R37.[1][2] The tourist information center is located in the town of Graskop. The Panorama Route also includes the Bourke Luck 🍀 Potholes 😎☺️
