The bridge over the Wöhrsee between Hauptsee and Herzogbad is the only way to cross the Wöhrsee. It was renovated in April 2024. During the construction work, the entire bridge, including the concrete foundations and lock, was dismantled and renewed. The wooden girders were replaced with steel girders so that rotting wood will no longer be a problem in the future.

In addition to its function as part of the castle's defense system, the Wöhrsee also served to operate the ducal court mill in the Middle Ages. It was used as a fishing water and as a source of ice. The mineral-rich water from a spring in the north of the Wöhrsee basin, today called the "Herzogbad", was used for healing and recreation during the time of Duchess Hedwig. From the late 18th century there was a health resort there. After the buildings were demolished, a Kneipp facility was built on the site. From the 19th century onwards, a garrison swimming school was operated on the Wöhrsee. From 1833, Burghausen citizens were also allowed to swim there. After the water had been temporarily privately owned after the garrison left in 1891, the city acquired the court mill and the Wöhrsee in 1901. Lake festivals were held regularly from 1913 to 1957. The previously separate bathing facilities for men and women were opened in 1934/1935 as the Wöhrsee family pool. The first German ice swimming championships took place in January 2015 on 25-meter-long lanes in the Wöhrsee natural pool, and the world championships in ice swimming took place in 2017. Whether you are a swimmer or a boater in the warm summer water, an ice skater or curling player on the frozen lake or a walker around the lake: As a leisure paradise, the Wöhrsee guarantees a natural experience with extra-long panoramic views of the castle in every season. There is also a winter bathing area, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. this season from October 15, 2024 to March 31, 2025. It is of course closed when there is snow or ice.
