The castle dates back to the end of the 18th century. Since the end of the 19th century it has been owned by the Barons von Herman. The castle and its gardens are only open to visitors for events.

The 18th century castle still belongs to the noble Gumppenberg family, who ruled Pöttmes for many centuries. The building and its park are not open to the public.

There used to be a castle belonging to the Barons von Gumppenberg on the mountain. After its destruction it was not rebuilt; instead, the materials from the ruins were used in Pöttmes. Johannes Freiherr von Gumppenberg built a log cabin on the mountain after the Second World War.

The city gate is very impressive - especially the large stork's nest on the top of the roof.
