Originally built by King Christian IV (1588-1648) and once owned by the Danish naval hero Niels Juel (1629-97), Valdemars Slot is Denmark's largest private residence and the only privately owned royal palace. Located on the island of Tåsinge, the estate is one of Denmark's most scenic spots. Nymindegab is a small, charming town at the southern end of Ringkøbing Fjord, once a fishing village and now a peaceful holiday destination. It’s known for its sweeping views of dunes and fjord, cozy cafés and easy access to the nearby Tipperne bird sanctuary and wide, uncrowded beaches.

To fish in Grærup Fishing Lake, you must purchase a fishing license from the Sportsfiskerforeningen for Oksbøl og Omegn. With this fishing license, you can also fish in Præstesø near Oksbøl if you have a valid Danish fishing license (Fisketegnet). Read more about the Fisketegnet here.

The castle is located on the site of the medieval castle Kærsgård. King Christian IV partially had this demolished when he had the palace built from 1639 to 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian from his second marriage to Kirsten Munk. The remains of the castle were integrated into the new building. The castle was built in the classic Renaissance style.
