この建造物は、1690年頃に建てられた、一部3廊形式のホールと倉庫棟からなるバロック様式の門です。責任者である建築家はセバスチャン・ル・プレストル・ド・ヴォーバンでした。この門のデザインは、当時のフランス国王ルイ14世へのオマージュとなっています。門の建物内には、衛兵室や倉庫があり、1885年から1925年までは郵便局、1928年までは電信局、その後は様々な部署、そして1937年から1998年までは市立図書館が入っていました。

排出口71号は、1688年から1691年にかけて建設された、一般公開されている建造物です。 この閘門は、Queich川をランダウ要塞の主壁を通して導いていました。閘門の前には、軍事インフラの一部であった小さな港がありました。鉄格子を下ろして敵の侵入を防ぐことができ、そのため要塞図には番号[71号]が付けられています。隣接するランプは、近くの騎兵隊兵舎の馬の給水場として使用されていました。

The French Gate at Obertorplatz (Upper Gate Square) marked the southern boundary of the city of Landau in earlier times. Its counterpart, the German Gate at Untertorplatz (Lower Gate Square), bordered Landau to the north. In medieval times, these two city gates were the only possible entrances to the city. The construction of both structures as part of the Vauban fortress dates back to the French architect Sébastien de Vauban and thus to the time when the city of Landau belonged to France. During this period, these two city gates were the only possible access points to the city. Both gates are identical in their design: in the style of Roman triumphal arches, they display the coat of arms of the Bourbon dynasty and that of Louis XIV, the Sun King.
