Piazza Ticino is located on the Monte Ceneri pass and with its totem made of Ticino stone represents the new landmark of the area. The symbolic value of this intervention is very strong: the square symbolically represents the union between 3 regions (Locarno, Bellinzona, Lugano), which is characterized by a historical past with deep divisions since the founding year of the canton of Ticino (1803). The totem element, on the other hand, represents the concretisation of the overall AlpTransit project, which sees the construction of the Ceneri base tunnel as its completion. The shell of the totem is made of Ticino stone from the excavations by AlpTransit.
