The history of the Meuse village of Leut is closely linked to the history of Vilain XIIII Castle, which dominates the village center. As early as the Middle Ages, the castle (then a fortress) was inhabited by the Lords of Leut. Over the centuries, the medieval moated castle with two moats and a drawbridge evolved into an open residential building with a permanent bridge over the remaining moat, surrounded by a spacious park in the English landscape style. A stately avenue connects the village square with the castle.

The ruins of Stein Castle are a so-called moated castle, built on a so-called 'motte'. It consists of two parts, an outer bailey with service buildings, separated from the main castle. There was probably already a fortification on the castle hill around 1220. Around 1300 a moated castle was built, of which a ruin still remains. The outer bailey and main castle are inseparable. They were separated by a wide moat. The lower-lying Benedenste Slot regulated traffic with the outside world. In addition to security, it mainly served economic purposes. The service personnel lived there and the military was stationed there. To get there, one had to cross a wide moat with a drawbridge from the village. Since the 18th century, this has been closed and spanned by a fixed bridge. The buildings of this "Voorgeborgte" have been completely renovated in later times and rest under water on older, thicker marl walls. The entrance hall with gate under a late Gothic bluestone arch (16th century) was a Valkenburg fief in the Middle Ages (the White Gate). This was expanded around 1730 into a complete tower, covered with a mansard roof. Above the entrance and in the weather vane is the coat of arms of the Merode's. In the late Middle Ages, the Lordship of Stein was owned by the Merode family. The gate was enclosed by low brick buildings with eastern and western cross-wings, which were replaced in the 19th century by a mansion (the new castle) and a commercial building (coach house). The castle ruins can only be visited by appointment and at a few special moments. You can also walk around the moat and then you will see it from almost every possible angle. There are not only the ruins. Be sure to walk to the White Gate behind which is the entrance to the courtyard (closed to unauthorized persons) (which you can also see). About the castle: "Stein Castle is perhaps the most interesting monument from the recent history of Stein. It is located in the Putbeek valley, a stone's throw from the Archaeology Museum. The castle dates from the beginning of the 13th century, when Stein arose as an independent Free Imperial Lordship from a former Carolingian royal estate under the sovereignty of a lord or baron. Both for the security and protection of his territory and his subjects and in recognition of his supremacy, he had the right to a defensive castle." A description and a lot of stories and facts can be found at https://stichtingerfgoedstein.nl/over-het-museum/kasteelruine-stein In the late Middle Ages, the Lordship of Stein was owned by the Merode family. You can still see that in the castle. For a while, fathers and sisters also lived in the castle, which is also known as the mission house and of which the monastery cemetery and a memorial column at the entrance bear witness.

With the Castle d'Aspremont-Lynden, the Museum Church, the Museum Pharmacy, Distillery Senden and the many historical buildings you travel back in time. The Drossaerdhuis, the Gatehouse and the Court of Justice are also worth a visit. In other words, a picturesque open-air museum.

The castle consists of an 8-meter high motte, called the 'Upper Castle', and a moated courtyard, called the 'Lower Castle'. The entire site is surrounded by a moat. A visit to this beautiful castle ruin is definitely recommended. You can climb both the keep and the red tower and take a look in the remaining cellars. The buildings in the courtyard have been converted into expensive private apartments.

On 20 March 1920, the castle was sold to the Eisden Coal Mine, which converted it into the Vilain XIIII Hospital. A new wing was added in 1957. After the hospital closed in the late 1980s, it became a nursing home for the elderly. The castle, the park and the avenues were classified as monuments. Until recently, the castle and the outbuildings housed a catering business and an antique shop, while classical concerts were regularly given in the main building. The castle was sold to the Flemish government agency (Tourism Flanders) in 2021, with the intention of renovating it and giving it a new purpose. By 2029, the castle will be open to visitors, a B&B will be opened and the park will be restored to its former glory.

There was already a primitive castle on this site in the 13th or 14th century. It was built by the Van Tongeren family, who ruled here from 1202 to 1383. No remains of this building have survived, but the large diameter of the current southeastern round corner tower shows that it was built on an older - round - structure. This is said to have concerned a five-story tower. The castle and the outbuildings housed a catering business and an antique shop until recently, and classical concerts were regularly given in the main building. The castle was sold to the Flemish government agency (Toerisme Vlaanderen) in 2021 with the intention of renovating it and giving it a new use. By 2029 the castle will be visitable, a B&B and the park will be restored.
