The Hanging Gate is a fantastic pub, please do pop in if you are passing, they really do need the trade🍻 The Hanging Gate is an old Drovers pub, with a history of hospitality stretching over 400 years. Situated in Higher Sutton, on the outskirts of a village 3 miles east of Macclesfield, the second highest pub in Cheshire, the Hanging Gate enjoys spectacular views across the Cheshire Plain. Dating from 1621, this is a proper rustic pub with low ceilings and beams, original stone-flagged floors and roaring fires. Great hike up to Shutlingsloe from the Scout Hut Car Park.

It's a great walk up to Shutlingsloe, some great views to be had.

The reservoirs at Macclesfield Forest are a great place to visit. So peaceful and quiet with some amazing views.

Mount Famine stands at 473m above Chinley and Hayfield. It lies just north of the Pennine Bridleway trail. The name probably comes as a result of the enclosure acts in the late 18th century which parcelled up the land and left some farmers in this area with poor quality land. On the plus side the views are great and there is a Bronze Age burial mound on the west side of the hill. It's been owned by the National Trust since 2006.

South Head at 494m stands at the western edge of the High Peak moors. The Pennine Way bridleway runs around its base just to the north but doesn't actually reach the summit. It's worth climbing for the views northeast up to Kinder and west across the more urban valley towards New Mills and Stockport.

Mount Famine is a relatively small hill, quite close to South Head which has spectacular views over the Kinder Scout Plateau.

A short sharp climb to the top where there is a cairn and a plaque to commemorate Frank Head. From here it's a short walk to the summit of Mount Famine to bag another Ethel peak.

Mount Famine is a hill in the Dark Peak that lies roughly halfway between the villages of Chinley and Hayfield, to the east of the A624 road. It commands great views of Kinder Scouts south-west corner

Reopen with limited opening hours, closes at 4pm most days now. No draft beer and looking a little rundown. Hopefully, it fully recovers.

I didn't climb up on my tour, but what a stunning-looking hill!

2021, still only the hatch open serving hot and cold drinks and snacks (Saturdays and Sundays 10-4) and no toilets. Lovely surroundings though!
