Marciana, whose origins date back to 35 BC, is located on a hill 375 metres above sea level and is one of the oldest towns, rich in historical and archaeological evidence. Under the rule of the Appiani, who chose the place as their residence, it experienced a great boom, starting with the construction of the most protected fortress on the island, which was to serve as a defence for the foundry and mint.
