ゴッズヒルでの周辺の簡単なハイキングとウォーキング

This section of path through the upper half of Islands Thorns Inclosure is utterly sublime, most particularly in springtime when all the leaves are fresh and new. Marvel at the sylvan beauty, birdsong and woodland views. It is my favourite inclosure in the New Forest!

Out of bounds in winter

This is the site of a huge vertical steel face target (6m high and 12m long) erected during WW2 that represented the hull side of a merchant ship and was constructed in a similar way. It was used for training and to test the penetration of air to ground ordnance including 20 and 40mm cannon rounds, 6pdr rounds fired from the Molins Gun (or Tsetse) fitted to converted DH Mosquitoes (designed to be used against U-Boats) and rockets launched from a variety of aircraft including Hawker Hurricanes. All the remains today is long stretch of concrete in the ground and other square footings close by.

This is a gorgeous pub and well-worth stopping by for some well-deserved food and drink. There are log fires here and a play area for children, so whether you are on your own, with friends or family, you will enjoy it.

A very green and picturesque area. On the footpath to Fold Farm is this footbridge over a stream feeding into the River Avon. Next door is the very English Miss Marple-like brook cottage on the edge of the Godshill Inclosure woodland. All in all, a beautiful part of the world.

Frankenbury is the site of an Iron Age hill fort that strategically overlooks the Avon Valley. The steep natural slopes on your left from the western and souther side defences of the fort. The north-east sides were defended by simply a bank and ditch. The fort encloses eleven acres and various artefacts have been found, including Iron Age and Roman pottery and coins.

The name, Telegraph Hill, was given to this spot after it was used as a semaphore station from 1795. Before then, it was called Plowed Garlic Hill. No sign of either exist today, but it has a place in history as one of the semaphore station used to communicate the victory at Waterloo.

Fabulous views of the Avon Valley including the meandering River Avon which reaches the English Channel at Christchurch Harbour and flows north through the city of Salisbury. This spot, just off a quiet road makes an excellent picnic stop with its bench and stunning view.
